Nothing ever fazes you ’cause you’re lost on feeling.

Drama scene from the one-act play script The Last Words I Heard Her Say, wherein brothers Heath and Charlie talk inside the hospital hallway.

Featured Scene – The Last Words I Heard Her Say

HEATH: How is she?

CHARLIE: What do you mean, how is she?

HEATH: I’m just asking how she –

CHARLIE: You were called.

HEATH: That’s why I’ve come…

Charlie continues pacing.

Heath peeks into the hospital room, stopping at the doorway.

CHARLIE: Go in…

HEATH: (stares at his mother) (puts his head down)

Heath steps back from the doorway and fumbles for a cigarette.

Heath back-pedals to a chair and sits. He drinks from his flask.

CHARLIE: Let me get some.

HEATH: At the bottom.

(pause.)

Heath passes his flask to Charlie.

Charlie takes the final sip and hands it back to Heath.

CHARLIE: Nothing left.

HEATH: …what I said.

Charlie continues pacing.

Heath lights a cigarette.

CHARLIE: Don’t smoke in here.

HEATH: I need to.

CHARLIE: You’re gonna get us thrown out of here!

HEATH: …(lights cigarette)

CHARLIE: What did you come here for?

HEATH: I’m here. That’s what matters.

CHARLIE: Put it out.

Heath takes a puff of his cigarette before stomping it out with his boot.

Pause.

HEATH: Where’s the big cat at?

CHARLIE: On his way. Might not make it in time. Already said my goodbyes, Heath; she, she asked to have you in there when she goes.

HEATH: Me?

CHARLIE: Yeah…

HEATH: Why not you or him?

CHARLIE: Cause Dad is old and unpredictable, and I’m not the chosen one.

HEATH: Chosen?

CHARLIE: Don’t get modest.

HEATH: I’m far from modest.

CHARLIE: She wants you to be at her side. Not me and not Dad. You happy hearing me say it? You! You, you, you and only you – those were her words, not mine…last words I heard her say. (beat) Even after all the mess you’ve made and all the cleaning up I—she talked about you like it was yesterday, still believing her golden child’s gonna save the world.

CHARLIE (cont’d): What a…she should only know the half of you, right? Ha ha, what you really are; she’d probably love you even more..ain’t that the truth.

So now, you’re gonna pick your raggedy, useless ass up outta that chair; you’re gonna hold her hand like you mean it, and you’re gonna do it for as long as necessary, for as long as she wants, until you hear that beeping noise sound off. You got it?

Cause that’s what that woman wants. Stated clearly and emphatically. (beat) Least you can give your own damn mother.

HEATH: What’s gonna be when HE shows up?

CHARLIE: She only asked for you, Heath.

Heath gets up from his chair and paces.

HEATH: Damn it all to hell. Isn’t this your routine? Aren’t you good at playing the big man on campus? The one with the most dense capacity? All thick and brawn with all your manliness? Can’t you go in there and settle things?

CHARLIE: Don’t do this, Heath.

HEATH: I’m just saying, it’s easy for you, isn’t it? Nothing ever fazes you ’cause you’re lost on feeling. You laugh in our faces like some sort of superman. Well, most of us, many of us – I can only speak for me really – FEEL THINGS, like anger, regret, guilt. I’m supposed to put that all aside for a dying woman?

CHARLIE: That’s your mother in there.

HEATH: Mother. Right. Right. That’s my mother.
