And you sleep soundly at night?
In drama scene, “Untold Story” Mr. Owel challenges Beck’s aptitude before agreeing to give his permission to marry his daughter.
BECK: I’m agreeable?
MR. OWEL: Yes, why?
BECK: I don’t see any reason to not be. Most people in life deem it necessary to get their point across in order to be considered right. They are rarely heard.
MR. OWEL: You don’t find the need to be “right” ever necessary?
BECK: Not really.
MR. OWEL: And you sleep soundly at night?
BECK: I sleep very well.
MR. OWEL: You don’t care for debate?
BECK: No, not at all.
MR. OWEL: Have you ever?
BECK: Never.
MR. OWEL: Goodness! I always imagined my daughter being with someone bold. Valiant. You are meek though, aren’t you? You don’t stand out from the crowd. If you were to enter a room, any room, no one would care to notice.
BECK: And you are right, sir.
MR. OWEL: And yet, my daughter loves you. Would you consider yourself a pushover?
BECK: I don’t believe I’ve ever been pushed over..no.
MR. OWEL: Oh, come off it! Stand up!
Beck stands up.
Look at you. A weed in a suit! As angular as a giraffe. What holds you together? Money? Intellect? You do have a bit of both, thank the heavens, but what exactly do you think my daughter sees in you?
BECK: In me? You would have to ask her that question, sir.
MR. OWEL: No. She will not be asked that question! I’m asking you.
BECK: Your daughter loves me because I am everything that you are not.
MR. OWEL: (taken aback) Oh. Oh, that’s quite something.
BECK: We are opposites.
MR. OWEL: Please, sit down.
Beck sits.
I might not be the ideal father, but I have qualities my daughter emphatically admires. She looks up to me – don’t you know that?
BECK: Sir?
MR. OWEL: Does she speak well of me?
BECK: Yes.
MR. OWEL: How?
BECK: I don’t feel it appropriate for me to share gossip.
MR. OWEL: Gossip? So I have become a subject of gossip between you and my daughter?
BECK: Of course not.
MR. OWEL: Well, you just used the word gossip.
BECK: Well, subject would have been a better word to use.
MR. OWEL: Now you’re making me feel like I’ve gone under a microscope!
BECK: Your daughter loves you. I assure you, Mr. Owel.
MR. OWEL: Are you saying this to wind me up?
BECK: Not at all.
MR. OWEL: I have a very close relationship with my daughter. I aim to keep it that way. I love her to bits. She is everything to me!
BECK: Yes.
MR. OWEL: And I dare you to stand between us!
BECK: It is not my intention to stand between you and your daughter.
