Featured Monologue – Waves Wash In

POLLY: Quite the shock…look at my hands, they’re shaking almost. I thought for sure you were going to fall all the way down the stairs, like Gerrard did. Do you remember Gerrard? It was so sudden. On his way out the door to meet with his daughter, he was going to take her shopping for her birthday, and he fell down the stairs. He died instantly. Right in front of his little granddaughter. She was the one who alerted his daughter, Kelly. Imagine? Poor thing. I wonder if it was traumatic for the grandchild. What’s the child’s name? Kimberly! That’s right. Kimberly. I wonder if Kimberly was too young to remember…I hope she was…I hope she doesn’t remember any of it. Carrying around that sort of trauma can be devastating. Don’t you think? Even if she doesn’t consciously remember it, maybe subconsciously it will get to her later. It’s in the nerves, really. The mind, the nerves, it’s all so, it’s all connected, isn’t it?

All its circuitry and ongoings, how the mind processes things, we still don’t even know the half of it. Poor child. (she pours the kettle into the tea glasses.) But, to come to think of it, is it better to remember such pain? Like, at least you know where it comes from. I mean, if you don’t remember pain, emotional pain, that’s worse ’cause you don’t know why you’re feeling the way you’re feeling, and that’s, that’s scary, isn’t it? I’d much rather know than not. What about you? Wouldn’t you rather know where your pain comes from?
