KELTON: …Well, alright. First, I was taken back by being the only one out here on the patio for such a lively event; then I noticed this dreadful dead silence; then I thought it wasn’t so dreadful after all. It was the kind of silence where only our own movements are heard, which led me to my usual, unsettling, morbid thoughts.
I began to think about my death…my life…my purpose and lack thereof…thinking about various images that have stood out in my memory over time…thinking about whether or not I’ve been kidding myself all along into believing that any aspect of this existence actually matters. (Beat)
A woman, a very fine woman, a friend I’ve known for quite some time, has changed. The way she talks, the way she walks…not gone, no, not gone, but yet gone…vacant, but existing…eyes of love..lost..anger…fear..yet still possessing kindness. It all pains me so…
What have I been? I, too, will be forgotten. (Beat) I remember playing (he points) as a little boy near that fountain, always gazing up at that naked woman with wings. Now, I find myself looking down at her, different perspective, same fountain. I’ve evolved; I’ve grown, but what am I supposed to learn? When I am gone, that fountain will remain exactly where it is – motionless, fixed – and I, for all my movement, for all my life, have done what?
